Whether it’s walking through the aisles of your local thrift store or wandering across the lawns of yard sales, there is a consistent trend that we all notice—stacks and stacks of books for sale.
But would you have ever thought that any of them could possibly be worth hundreds of dollars?
Would you believe me if I told you that some books have sold for tens of thousands or even millions of dollars?
While it’s pretty unlikely that most of the books you find at garage sales or out thrift shopping are going to be valued quite that high, it is still very possible you could still make some big bucks from flipping books.

If you already enjoy thrift shopping or going to garage sales, then searching through the book section of your local thrift store, flea market, or nearby bookstores is a great place to start. You are also likely to have some good success at yard sales, garage sales, and estate sales.
Next time you are out thrift shopping or you’re out at garage sales, stop by the book section. Keep your eyes out for classic books, first edition books, comic books, limited editions, book series, and generally well-known brands.
Some of these valuable books can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. An example of this is the 1937 release of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien valued at over $128,000 or the 1997 release of Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone valued at $471,000.
Your chances of finding copies of books with this high of value are low, but not impossible.
But the reason why flipping books is such a great side hustle is that you can easily spend a little extra time looking at book sections at your local Goodwill store or flea market. If you’re already there, you might as well stop for a few minutes and glance at what they have.
And since thrift store finds are always rotating with new stock, your chances of snagging some great deals are always changing.

Which types of books are the most valuable
The types of books that are the most valuable include classic books, first edition copies, limited editions, comic books, antique books, first printing, and more.
When you find a book that is signed by the author, this can greatly increase its value.
A similar example of this is the series of all seven C.S. Lewis Chronicles of Narnia books that are signed by the illustrator Pauline Baynes. This sold at auction for $100,000.
Another time when an author signed their book, it was able to bring in the final bid price of $35,000 for Harper Lee’s Novel To Kill A Mockingbird.
Top 27 most valuable books to look for in thrift stores
Some of the most valuable books are the ones that come in series, or by very successful authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis Carroll, Stephanie Meyer, Suzanne Collins, and Edgar Allen Poe.
The Harry Potter books are among some of the most successful modern book series out there. So when you happen to glance at one as you walk through your local thrift store or yard sales, stop for a moment and check the title page. Look for anything that might say first edition or even second edition.
The same thing goes for books like The Hobbit, The Great Gatsby, and any other commonly sold series and novels that are still in good circulation today.
Comic books are another great thing to keep your eyes out for. Finding comics from famous authors like Stan Lee can greatly increase the value of comic books you find. When sold as part of a collection, some of his work has been able to sell for up to $800.
Cook books are surprisingly valuable thrift store finds as well. These old cookbooks often had limited printing which makes the recipes rare, and therefore more valuable. Betty Crocker is one of the most famous cook books to keep an eye out for as some of the limited editions have sold for up to $500 at auctions.
Here is a list of favorite books in high demand, with a high price ticket at auction sites. Where else to find some of the most valuable books
If you’re going to estate sales, you are even more likely to find some great deals on old books. Especially full series, first edition copies, limited editions, classic books, or even the first printing of many old books.
Estates sales are also more likely to have antique books and classic books that a rare book collector may be partial to. And these are the types of books that are the best finds because of their higher price and value.
So, keep an eye out for authors like Lewis Carrol, Edgar Allen Poe, Jane Austen, Stephen King, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K Rowling, Harper Lee, Roald Dahl, James Joyce, Charles Dickens and any other authors of the books already mentioned.
Additionally, pay close attention to the condition of any books you find when thrifting. Even if they are in poor condition, they may still be worth money.
Another great way for you to find some high demand collectibles is to search nonprofit thrift stores. Often times people who have had garage sales, yard sales, or estate sales may just bring anything they weren’t able to sell to their local nonprofit thrift stores. This is the best way for you to snag an amazing deal on some high price books without having to haggle down on the price.

How to make money flipping books
When flipping books, the condition in which the book is in will make a big difference. However, whether it’s in good condition or poor condition they will still have great value, so don’t toss any old books away just yet.
To determine if a book is in good condition, first check to make sure there are no torn pages, noticeable stains, scuffing, burn marks, or any other signs of clear damage to the inside of the book. Next, you will want to examine the outer shell and spine to make sure that it is also in good shape and not torn, worn, or falling apart.
If you have the original dust jacket, this can add value to your bid for a little extra money as well.
Original dust jackets were the paper covers that you often see with hard-cover books to protect them from the printer to the store, and then to their new homes.
To determine the value of your book, you will want to search eBay and other auction sites to give you a rough estimate of where your book may be valued at.
You can visit Heritage Auctions and try their free auction appraisal. You can also sell your books on Heritage Auctions as well.
Pay close attention to the details in your book. Aside from the physical good condition or poor condition, do you notice any handwritten notes on the front pages or title page? Does there appear to be any signatures, and are they actually the author’s signature or someone else’s? What dates do you see?
Do you notice anywhere that says if it’s a first edition or second edition? Remember, limited editions are what can make a thrifted book worth tons of extra money.
Have you ever made money flipping books, or flipping other things you’ve found at your local thrift store or when you’ve been to garage sales?

Brilliant share, unfortunately i can not buy English books here as I live in a German-speaking country, I will keep these in mind
So interesting!! You always hear about people finding vintage and expensive things at thrift shops but I never thought about books!!
Books can sometimes be a neat find because most people pass them by.
I used to sell books on ebay but I found that once inflation started rising I wasn’t selling as much so I stopped.
